Detail from "La Charette de foi, allegorie (vanite du monde, peches capitaux)" c. 1598 - Atelier de Gillis Mostaert (1534-1598) - Louvre Museum, Paris, France.
Note: This individual (perhaps an "alcoholist") appears to
be jaundiced and have fluid in the abdomen (Ascites). This may be an
illustration of the consequences of liver cirrhosis (a degeneration of hepatic
cells causing fibrosis) that can follow hepatitis as well as other inflammatory
events induced by chronic abuse of alcohol. This painting is about vices which
supports that this "malady" or patient is an alcoholic.
