"Charles I, King of England" (see detail) by
Anton Van Dyck (1599-1641) - Louvre Museum, Paris, France
Note: Arrogant pose of a king who "lost his head" and was
beheaded leaving a decapitated government in the hands of
radical reformers. Being puritanical, the lay rulers opted
to sell artistic collections to other sovereigns. After
England defeated Napoleon and plundered Europe, appreciation
for art increased.
