"Denis Diderot" (1713-1784) c. 1769 by Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806)
Pioneer encyclopedist and famous French thinker. His monumental work is the Encyclopedia
or Cyclopedia, a project fiercely opposed by the Roman Church. In 1759 the Encyclopedia
was formally suppressed. Diderot was paid 120 pounds sterling for his monumental work. Voltaire comment
was " ... an army contractor makes 800 pounds in a day!" (not much has changed since).
