"Jupiter Rebuked by Venus", c. 1612 by Abraham Janssens (1573-1632) - Art Institute, Chicago, Illinois. This scene may suggest that Zeus may have spanked Cupid for shooting his "love" arrows indiscriminately which made even Zeus at risk of becoming a victim of unsolicited and unwelcome feelings of lust. Note that Janssens competed with his Flemish compatriot Reubens in the production of large scale paintings using ideas from classic mythology. |
