NOTE: One of four paintings commissioned by Ferdinando Gonzaga concerned with the "History of Hercules" based on accounts by Ovid in his "Metamorphoses". The hydra was a seven headed serpent that thrived on the shores lake Lerne. This painting ended in the collection of Charles I of England and after his beheading was purchased by Louis XIV in 1662. |
