"Victory of Samothrace", c. 190 B.C. - Louvre Museum, Paris, France

Note: The statue is dedicated to the highly venerated "Cabiri" deities of probable Phrygian origin
and were protectors of fertility and sailors. The deities cited most often are; Axierus, Axiocersa,
Axiocersus and Cadmilus. The Greeks connected them with Demeter, Dionysus and Hermes.

In 1863, the French vice-consul Charles Chanpoiseau deployed in Turkey and was "exhuming"
antiquities in the Island of Samothrace and discovered the "victory" sculpture. The "victory" stood
on a base made from grey marble originating in Rhodos and the figure was carved from white marble
from Paros. The right wing and bust are reconstructed. The sculptor remains unknown.
