"Jeune fille endormie: Ariane (Ariadne)", (see detail) c. 100-200 A.D., marble from the Roman Imperial period, variant of the celebrated "Sleeping Ariadne" in the Vatican Museum - Louvre Museum, Paris, France.

Comment: Ariadne (Ariane), daughter of King Minos of Crete, helped Theseus to kill the monster Minotaur and to be able to escape. Theseus abandoned Ariadne while she was asleep on the shore of the island Naxos (Dia) from where she was rescued by Bacchus who espoused her.
