INTRODUCTION
The terms YOKE - YOLK open two landscapes,
one humanistic and another, presented
here, that is biological and medical.
Yoke in Sanskrit or Jugum in Latin imply "to
join", thus to restrict. In Spanish con"yuge"
means spouse, or someone who no longer is
free but restricted or "yoked" by martial
vows.
Constriction band.
In humans, constriction of amniotic bands cause
amputations and other severe deformations. |
"Yolk" or "Vite"llus in Latin, refer to the
"Yellow" of the egg where the "Vita" or life
of the chick is located. (Humanities and Fine Arts

VITELLINE or UMBILICAL CAVITY
In plants, VITELLUS or YOLK refers to the part of
the seed or sac that nurtures the embryo. During sprouting
or germination, the vitellus does not rise out
beyond the integuments as does the "germ" or bud of a
"germinating" plant.
Nurturing systems
for the unborn rely on the yolk (fish, birds,
crocodilians), a Vitelline organ (bats and other
marsupials) or the placenta (mammals). |
The umbilical cord anchors
the fetus to the placenta. In adults what remains is the navel
or a protrusion or "boss" or "umbo". |
In non-placental animals such as marsupials,
the VITELLINE organ absorbs maternal nutrients
during their short intrauterine gestation. In animals with longer gestations, it is the
placenta and not the vitelline organ that
nurtures the embryo and fetus.
In humans, the YOLK or UMBILICAL vesicle refers
to the part of the fertilized egg or ovum sac
from which the embryo will arise.
Eggs,
yolk and ovocytes often are fallible and result in infertility or abortions. |
OMPHALON is another name for UMBILICUS. An
UMBILOMPHALOCELE or OMPHALOCELE is a
malformation of the UMBILICAL cord characterized
by the presence of a membranous sac or "cele"
protruding from within the umbilical cord.
