For Romans, the summit or zenith of each year
was the festivity of SATRUNalia, a week long
celebration ending December 24th.
Regarding December 25th, the birthday of Mithra,
Christian church leaders adopted this day as the Nativity or
"Navidad" of Christ. The object was to obliterate the popularity
of Mithraism.

The last day of DECEMBER closes an ANNUAL yearly
CHRONOLOGY or CALENDar or cycle. The first day of
JANUARY opens a new CALENDar with JOVIAL celebrations to JOVE and
dedicated to JANUS and SATURN.

Mythology holds that as Chronos was escaping a
prophecy of doom, he became LATENT among LATIN
people and strived to SATURate them with abundance. This is how Chronos acquired the
name SATURn.

Saturn or Chronos |
SATURN was welcomed to LATIUM by JANUS and JANA
who were the custodians of the universe. Ovid said:
"Everything depends on the Beginning". Since then, Europeans uphold the
tradition that events during January 1st set a pattern for the remainder of the
year. "Happy New Year (day)" is now the customary "good day" salutation.
In this spirit, the effigy of JANUs stood at
doorways and entrances and was invoked each
morning before prayers were said to other Gods.
Today, politeness calls for a matutine salutation
such as "good morning" or "good day" as a prelude
to any discourse.
During peace, the doors of the temple of JANUS or
IANUA (the Roman Treasury) were closed. During war, the gates were kept open
(perhaps the Romans knew well the unpredictable cost of war).
The link of endings with beginnings is amalgamated in the Saturn Janus pair. Artists
represented them as bi-frons figures, one face
was that of Rex Sacrorum or Janus and the other
of Saturn, Eon or Chronos. One looked forward - the other gazed at the past.

Time whether as Shiva or Saturn creates and destroys all. |
Many fine artists depict Saturn with a SCythe to stress his link with ripened
grains ready for harvest. In any case, whether called "Father Time", Chronos or
Saturn, the cycles of nature and their links with time are exceedingly
complex as are the ideas conveyed by these deities.
