Mr. Zenon asked about
BYTE

BYTE is a technical computer term to denote the
memory required to store one character.
-----

Mr. Jaspreet asked about the origin of
SWEET

Jesuits may dislike Paganism but adopted ideas
from Goddess SUADELA and use as their own
her motto to SWEETNESS or SUAVITAS
is most PERSUASIVE
SUADELA had SUAVE speech
-----

EON ION

AEON or EON may be
AGELESS but much more important is that
ION has to do with attraction and
FINE REFINED AFFINITY which is perhaps why
IONIC culture and IONIAN people are so remembered
in any case attraction in a chemical sense relates to
IONIZATION as if in a POLARIZED world of opposites
PAIRING stands for SEX and
STABILITY

So long! Do not become ionized nor polarized!
It is bad for your heart - it erodes your Eons.

-----

Mr. Nilanjan asked bout the Sanskrit root for
THORN

The root in Sanskrit is
DERNA and in Ukrainian we have
DERTY meaning TO TEAR or TORN pointing to English
DRAPE and Spanish
TRAPO for RAG and
TRAPPINGS etc.
note THORN - TORN
--------------------------

AGE ANCIENT OLD

AGE and its link to
AYUS AION speak for our dreams for
ALWAYS or
IONS whose ethereal character is linked with
STABLE STATUS of STATE while
THITHONOS reminds us that
IMMORTALITY without YOUTH can become UGLY
in any case to get
OLD or to become an
ELDER or ADULT we must not avoid ADULTERATED
ALIMENTATION or NOURISHENT for our
GROWTH at times provided by
ALIMONIES

So have a long life! live! love!
Stay alive and remember Amor! not mortal Mors

Ms B. seems confused about the word ideas and roots in
CLONE and CLITORIS

CLONE is from Greek KLON for TWIG, implying REPLICA.
CLITORIS is from Greek KLEIEIN for TO HIDE or CLOSE

The CLITORIS may be seen by some (incorrectly) as a
CLONE of the penis - in reality it is an erectile organ
hidden by the genital labia. CLONE implies "those
descended from a SINGLE individual (not a pair of parents).

KLON or twigs were used as whips
(see page "other ideas in words" for whip wife ...)

In medicine, violent rhytmic motions are called
CLONIC describing convulsive like movements
akin to those who are being whipped.
CLONUS movements are a sign of central nervous system
abnormalities.

Ms. K. seeks prefixes, suffixes and roots in word
ideas linked with

HOME Domestic
STRENGTH Fortified
ROCK Petrograd

I do not know what the FIX or pre post or suFIX
may be but ... we will try to HOME and
DOMesticate this DYNamic request with
FORtitude even if it STRains our STRenght and
if it takes a TITANIC effort that may PETRify or
reinFORCE or FORTify our DOMain in FORT Titus.

In Ukrainian DOM = domicile
DYNAMO = generator of electric energy

If you need more ideas, let us know.

Mr. H. seeks a better understanding of the
provocative links and complexities linking

CADAVER
CADENCE
CASE
CASUAL
CASUALTY
ACCIDENT
OCCIDENT
DECADENCE

We agree! but it is too long and complex to
display these links here - for now note!

eng OCCIDENT = id+ WHERE THE SUN "falls" or
lat OCCIDERE TO FALL sug> OXIDIZE
sp OCASO DECADENCE
lat CASUALIS CASUALTY
    CADENTIA A FALLING
    CADERE TO FALL
    CADENCE CYCLE RHYTHM
    CADAVER CORPSE sug> CORPORATION
enough for now of this CADENT DECADENT subject.
(If you need more details, let us know)
One visitor asked about a CRAZY CRAZE and we tried to
deal with this BERSERK point without FRENZY because it
may be just a FAD or an ECCENTRIC KOOKY BIZARRE
request that is not LUDICROUS but rather AMAZING.

Seriously! we post as "word of the day" (click above)
the ideas inherent in the words ALIENATED and as an
ALIEN my hope is that our visitors will not get a
penchant to STRANGLE STRANGE STRANGERS.

=====
Camilla asked about SHOE - well!
Once upon the time, long long time ago there were
the Romans who spoke Latin and shielded their bodies
from the barbarians with a SCUTUM which the Frisians
adapted into SKOH - with time our shields became
reduced to protect our feet - and SHOES gained hold of
feminine imagination.

=====
Thnx would like to know where the word YAHOO comes
from ... I know it does not come from YAIVEH and it
is not nice to say it has roots in YANKEE - not to
be accused of being a YAMMER, I will venture to say
that YAHOO has to do with HOOLIGAN - this slur was
directed at a tribe living in Guiana called Yaos or
Yahos - the rest is history ...

=====
Cristina seeks to understand PROCRASTINATE - good luck!,
it seems a universal affliction - Cristina could find
out from any dictionary - but perhaps we offer less
boring views - remember! PROCRASTINATE has nothing to do
with PROCREATION - in fact humans PROCREATE in excess -
PRO CRAS denotes a leaning toward CRAS or NOT TODAY
but TOMORROW - the word has no linkages with
Mexico.

=====
Tom does not get a CLEAR idea in CLARus but if he gets
a CLARinet his doubts will be CLARified - is that CLEAR?
if not, you could imbibe some CLARET like Chablis or
Chianti or some other sort of CLEAR light red wine and
CLARITY will CLEARLY follow.

=====
Mr. F. proposed we examine
GORE and its connections with
CLOTTED BLOOD
BLOODY STAB
IMPALE PIERCE PUNCTURE

In old English GAR is for spear
       Gaelic GUR is for festering
       Welsh GOR is for pus

Notably in Ukrainian HORE is
SORROW MISERY DISTRESS GRIEF

Mr. Tom requested ideas regarding the roots in
ALFATHER or ALFADIR and suggested links with
ALPHA and TAUR for bull or ox.
Comments are most welcome.

=====
Mr. Jack asked for ideas regarding the origin of
SHRINK for psychotherapist and suggested that
HEAD SHRINKER as per primitive tribes - or rather
"unaculturated" people - may the a likely
explanation.
(The Jibaros did a splendid job shrinking human
heads. Ed.)
Comments are most welcome.
=====

Mr. Mark was interested in the roots of
         RACE in Spanish RAZA
consider TRACE in sp TRAZAR
         TRAIT

It was Johann Blumenbach who in 1795 proposed
that Europeans were CAUCASIANS to underscore
the fantasy that they originated in the
CAUCASUS region. Notably, some recent scientific
findings suggest that in fact most IndoEuropean
languages; Slavic, Norse, Greek, Latin, as well as
Sanskrit stem from a population who lived in the
vicinity of the river Dnieper. Apparently these
people domesticated the horse and rapidly conquered
the neighbors to the east (India, Iran),
west (Germany), south (Greece) and north
(Scandinavia).

DIVINE CONJURER ORACLE OMEN OMENTUM
Interesting array with roots in
AUGURY AUGUST
AB OMINABLE I presume is the OMEN
rejected as AB Normal

Latin AUGUR implies AUGMENT and PROPHECY

For the ancients, only
DIVINE Jove could DIVINE the future.
Now we see on TV many
ORAL ORACLES selling OMENS
to feed their OMENTUM

A growing OMENTUM (the fatty apron-like tissue
in front of our intestines) is an OMEN or
AUGMURY of an AUGENTING WEIGHT or OBESITY or
at least of an ABOMINABLE ENLARGED ABDOMEN
=====

CARPE DIEM CARPE relates to dig, harvest or
             CARVE note
             CARPAL bones of the hand
CARPAR in Spanish is for "gather with intensity"
DIEM or day, implies "your day or destiny is
                     in your hands".
"Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero" or
Enjoy the day trusting the future as little as possible,
       from Odes I by Horace
The stoics, particularly Epictetus, stressed that
"Joy has to be earned", implying "fruitful work is joy giving".
In Greek, KARPOS denotes "fruit pit" or "fruit of work".

(More from a previous exchange)
In Latin CARP CARPERE denotes to GATHER or to PLUCK
           "CARPE DIEM" admonishes us to
"Pluck the joy from each day"
Greek KARPOS = FRUIT or
            CARPOS for "KERNEL LIKE"
In medicine note
         METACARPAL bones between the
             CARPAL wrist bones and the
         PHALANGES or DIGITS
The above extend toward CARAT KARYOTYPE etc

TIDE relates to "measured time" and therefore to
       RHYTHM

MATHEMATICS MATHEMA = what is learned
=====

JUVENAL very likely relates to JUNIOR JUVENILE and
the mythological JUNONES and JUVENTAS (also known as
HEBE or GANYMEDA). In historic terms there was an
unfortunate beloved Roman poet JUVENAL - his story
is found in any classic source.
=====

VOICE has links with
VOX VOCAL VOCABULARY and these points were made
last time and are to be found in the Forum page.

We will add that, if our correspondent wishes to
find more, let him go beyond his
VOCAL requests for roots of words but also cast his
VOTE to materialize his
VERB because
VERBOSITY alone is not enough. Note that in Latin
UERBUM stands for
WORD and that in Lithuanian
VARDAS stands for NAME while in Sanskrit
VRATAM is for
VOW leading to ideas in Ukrainian regarding
ROTA for OATH and
ROT for MOUTH or ORAL linking ORAL VOW with INVOCATIONS

The above, I supose, offers enough food for thought.

In any event,
ORAL VOWS or OATH are SPECIAL VOICE VOTES based on WORDS
=====

A Lady asked for the ideas in
GREEN that is a complex question that can not
be anwered in a brief manner - we suggest for now
GREEN GROWS THE GRASS - once a popular song exported by
British sailors to Latin America which led (perhaps)
Chilean "locals" (perhaps) to coin the term
GRIN GO to denote "English speaking foreign devil", now
an epithet equivalent to "Yankee".

In any event,
GREEN GROW GROWTH GRASS GRAZE are intimately linked
in their roots and history. Soon we will post GROWTH as
a "Word of the Day".
=====

The same Lady asked for ideas in
PEACE - She must be intereseted in
GREEN PEACE

The only way to grasp
PEACE is to explore the Latin roots of
PAX this can be found in any reference book and should
      activate links toward
PACIFIC PACT PANG IMPACT and other domains.

In mythology, PAX was one of three sisters or Horae.
She stood for CALM CONCORD SERENITY SECURITY
Her "birth day " was 30th of January.
=====

PAL conveys ideas of
BROTHER and in Gypsy is
PRAL but the story goes on because
     in Ukrainian brother is
BRAT and in Sanskrit
BHRATR - so, there it is!
=====

CAUCUS has to do with ideas that
POLITICS and DRINK and "bed" fellows.
(linking fellow with fellatio is another
political issue - as you know)

Seriously, when we share a
POTABE drink in a
POT which is implicit in
SYMPOSIUM, we share ideas as well. In Greek
KAUKOS is a
DRINKING VESSEL

VISION

VIS is POWER in Latin as in
VISIONARY
           Lets Play!
If you do not have a

Somebody asked is to STRANGLE a STRANGER STRANGE?

STRANGE may,
STRictly speaking, be the
STRing that
conSTRains
conSTRtructive thoughts and may
STRangle the

oeSTRO called by some
the "mad ardent desire" associated with
                femininity or
the "poetic delirium" called by some sex -
in any case, - enough of such idealistic
STRands which may be
STRicking but ... we must go on - so!.
                lets end by saying
STR seems to convey ideas of
conSTRaint as in to bind or to hinder or to
obSTRuct or to limit etc.
=====

THRESHOLD - implies LIMIT
            in Latin LIMEN
            in Spanish LINTEL
in Medicine POINT beyond which there is
                        an effect
THRASHER a bird
a lurking link to English roots of this idea
THRASH beat break

FLABBER and FLABBERgasted

FLAX should easily

ABRAXAX one of the names for the God MITHRA

NATIVE AMERICAN names ... of STATES
We are not experts on the subject of NAMES,
NAMELY, clues from NOMENclature - such is to be
found in some of the URL's given in our "Links"
page. To show that we are not uninterested,
            we point to
ALABAMA
MISSISSIPPI among other "Native" State names. A pity there
are no States named for the MIAMI, APACHE,
            MESCALERO, MUSCOGEE, PASCAGOULA, PENSACOLA, DETROIT,
and other "extinct" people. Some experts note that
elimination of native names is a form of
"ecologic and cultural" "imperialism" and others
note an ongoing trend to "rename" "foreign"
names with "English" versions, as if the U.S. is
solely "anglo". Perhaps the capital of Louisiana
will become "SMITHVILLE" or at least "RED STICK"
to erase the "foreign" overtones in "BATON ROUGE".

WEDNESDAY We should start with
WED or in Old English a PLEDGE or
WEDLOCK to some degree related to the
WEDGE of the
WEDDING cake to be shared by families
           plus the sexual overtones
           which demanded a contract or
security for the children to come
           a MERCENARY idea perhaps but
MIERCOLES is WEDNESDAY in Spanish and this
           is the day of
MERCURY the God of
MERCENARY
MERCHANTS related to contracts being sealed
           Note that in many cultures
WEDNESDAY is the MARKET DAY

Ms S seeks ideas regarding the origin of GENOCIDE

A provocative and elegant cascade of ideas emanates
from the array displayed below. Each "word-idea" is
presented in more detail as part of the current

              "Word of the Day".

GE Gaea or Demeter
GEN Self
GENDER To beget
GENE Unit of hereditary information
GENEA Race
GENEALOGY Family roots or tree
GENERA Species
GENERAL A class
GENERATE To beget
GENEROUS Giving
GENESIS Origin
GENETICS Study of genesis and inheritance

GENIE A number of children of Fatua and Fatuus known for their cheer
GENITAL Organs of generation
GENITALES Names of spirits or genius protecting each newborn
GENETRIX Magna Mater or Great Mother or Cybele
GENIUS Angel
GENOCIDE The systematic killing of a whole people, nation or
            species.

What the origin of HARMONY asked Mr. Frank

Once upon the time, Gods gave a nice wife to a fellow called
KADMOS. Her name was HARMONIA. She was the beautiful daughter
of Ares and Aphrodite. The Gods gave HARMONIA magnificent gifts.

HARMONY implies FIT or FITTING or RHYTHMIC.
It seems that HARMONY is not welcomed in modern art nor music.

In science, findings and theories must be in HARMONY or
FIT nature (reality).

A visitor "Galapagos" posed the difficult question of the
connection between BARNACLE and PENIS. Frankly, it was not
easy to find a clue.

Note that BARN relates to BARLEY which are a type of
grasses cultivated since time immemorial. These grasses
belong to the class HORDEUM (note Horticulture). In
Ukrainian HOROD garden and also
                            fenced space
Latin HORREUM is BARN or closed space.

BARNACLE according to Thomas H. Huxley and L. Agassiz is
"A shrimp standing on its head
encased in a limestone house ...
note old Irish BERN = cleft

Barnacles are marine crustaceans and there are two major
sub-groups:

CIRRIPEDIA from Latin CIRRI for "curly hair like"
tentacles - a means to fasten the barnacle to boats etc.
and

BALANOMORPHA from Greek BALANOS for "acorn like" thus
suggestive of the shape of a PENILE GLANS.

During the dark ages (politely called as "Middle Age" by
those whose ancestry stems from these areas of Europe)
a popular belief held that geese grew from shellfish,
presumably because both have similar long "necks".

Mr Anders proposes that "ANG or ENG" stand fro "odd-shaped" as in
England.

Perhpas the English are odd but ... to my best recollection
in Latin CANTHUS CANTHI or in Ukrainian KANT stand for SHARP EDGE
or ANGLE as in ANGLICAN. A sort of spine or spinous property.
Note Spanish ANGULO = angle. One peculiar habit is that we say
Anglo-Saxon rather than Anglo-Norman - a denial of historic events,
as if "Anglos" prefer a link with "Germanic" over "Latin".

Acanthus in Biology is a species of prickly plants
Acanthoma in Medicine describes a skin tumor.
Corinthian columns have acanthus foliage.

In ANGER and AGONY our ANGST may produce angular positions.

Mr. Th. was perplexed by the roots of "POLITE".

Perhaps Mr. Th. is POLish and realized that in Latin POLire is

POLite POLitician". Historians note that Latin POLIS = city as
if to live in congested civilized places we need to learn
to be POLITE. Well, tell some of our inner city dwellers this ...
I am sure our POLITICIANS do not agree that it is POLITIC to
enforce POLITE behavior.

Liz raised several questions - the one we picked relates to

                           PUBERTY
                         ADOLESCENT
                           ADULT

The above are cardinal word ideas and are expanded under
Current "Word of the Day".

In my view, the essential idea centers in dependency -
a need for a tutor - an inability to truly care for others -
With maturation, the child becomes a semi-independent
adolescent, capable of reproducing but incapable of nurturing
others - Ancient word roots emphasize the core idea in "adult"
to be the capacity to care "beyond self" - modern youth often
have babies to "have something to love ME" as if children are
PETS or PUPPETS or PUPPIES (more below).

To continue, consider

                          PUBERTAL
                          PUDENDAL
                           PUBIC
                           PUDOR

During puberty emerge contradictions like blustery or
IMPUDENT behavior along with clumsy shyness.

                        ADOLESCENCE
transports the former child into the
                           PUBLIC

English pupil individual needing guidance
Biology pupa insect in puberty or adolesce
                    an intermediate stage of development
Medicine pupilla site in the eye where reflected images

                 Part 1 of 3

Spring - see "Word of the Day"
Spring - the core ideas concern
          "time" and "beginning".
Until fairly recent times the "new year" started
during Spring.

Regarding Spring Festivities and Passover Paschal
Easter celebrations, the connection is with "resurrection"
or "spring-back" of "vitality" or "life" after a "deadly"
"tempus hIBERnum" during which life hIBERnates in IBERia.

In Rome Spring was linked with "Flora" and "Flowering" as
denoted by "April" or the month of "Aperture" of buds,
a fact retained in
Ukrainian April = kviten
             Kvita flower
Latin vita life

Starting each April 28th, Romans celebrated " Floralia "
with unbounded licenciousness.

Note that Flora was identified with the Greek Godess of
flowers Chloris.

PLAY - SPRING, as life begins anew, is announced by
CHLORIS and a new crop of CHLOROPHIL or CHLOROPHYLL.

             Part 2 of 3

We explored Spring as the onset of germination or
budding or flowering - the aperture in April
of a new life cycle.

We now explore LIFE and ideas linking
LEAVE LEAVES LIFT with LIVING LOVE and LIVER ...
and EGG YOKE GERM GERMINATION OVUM OVARY ZOO ...

"No single thing abides
 but all things flow
 fragment to fragment cling
 the things thus grow ...
until we name them ..." from Lucretius

"... life is a dream ...
 and dreams themselves

Ukrainian Vid aspect figure

Consider that to live we need
a healthy liver to burn our lipids

we become livid as a prelude to a
trip to oblivion ...

Easter conjures ideas that Levitate our spirits toward the
East or Levant and feelings found in Paschal, Passover, Ramadan,
Februa, traditions often celebrated during February.

Take a tour to grasp the beauty and depth denoted by Easter.
You have several choices:

Choice 1: an artistic Ukrainian Easter Egg Pysanka opening
           followed by a page linking
... Passover Pascha Ramadan ... lift zygote
           ... Easter east estrus estrogen
           ... fasting jejunum
... Floralia, Februa, Carnival ... Momus

Choice 2: Menu of a number of key words to explore on your own.

Choice 3: Read on

(note: this is Part 3 of 3 - rest is under Forum)

Easter relates to the East or Levant and it represents an ancient
festival that Christians and other religions perpetuate and "expropriate".

Eggs life and love are connected symbolically.

Our ideas of Lent are related to the Roman Februa which we preserve as
February. Strict observance of Lent or Februa called for Fasting, thus to refuse
Dejeuner to purify the tripes or jejunum.

In anticipation of such sacrifices, arose Carnivorous Carnal Carnival
called by those with culinary inclinations Mardi Gras. In any case,
such festivities foster the rule of Mocking King Momus.

Because Momus mocked Zeus, he was punished to mock himself to death, perhaps
a reminder that an excess of "happy times" is often self abusive. It is
prudent to celebrate with caution and watch our living liver to avoid becoming
livid and a candidate for candle in oblivion.

Regarding celebrations and human eggs or oocytes, this should not be a
mocking matter because of concerns relating to matrix maternity.

Now we may be ready for April and for the aperture of a Spring Sprinkling a
Spray of Sprouting Flowers in honor of Floralia.

With Easter we welcome the Revival of Vitality.
Christians welcome the Revival of Christ.

end of Easter

GENII
FATUA
FATAL
FATE relate to ideas stretching all the way
to Ge or Demeter and Gen or Self relating both

NIGGARDLY
NIGGARD implies Miserly Miser - it has roots in
NEAP TIDE from old English NEP = unable
(find more comments in the "Forum" page)
=====
INDIVIDUAL in essence implies IN DI VISIBLE or SELF.
In this sense the idea links with GEN GENE GENETICS (see
"Word of the Day") as well as with EGO.

In biology, "diathesis" implies "individuality" or
distinctness (inseparable).

A biologic organism is indivisible ... we also are
a social animal. "There is really no such creature as
a single individual ... he has no more life of his own
than a cast-off cell marooned from the surface of your skin".

(in "The Lives of a Cell" by Lewis Thomas.

Worship of "individualism" or "egotism" merits attention.
=====
GUILT implies INNER SORROW - PAIN - PENITENCE
              and most often includes SHAME

From German SCHULD or should - the idea is more complex
than its Teutonic root. One implication is Fault or
in Spanish FALta = flaw, lack, deficiency or in
old Saxon FAH guilt, hatred.

Only the IN SANE are free or INNOCENT of GUILT
Spanish INOCENTE = name applied to children,
the mentally ill and mentally retarded.

Guilt The above relates to SIN
Latin sons = sin
          sine without
          peccare failure
          peccatum sin offense fault

Guilt penetrates and often should engender penitence.
Latin penes = interior inside
         penitus inner
English penitence inner sorrow
penitentiary perhaps a place created to
                       cause sorrow

Latin criminator culpable culpit

Mythology offers Ate (Ates) or Eris linked to discord
and evil; Erinys or the Erynnues sisters who
represent "the terrors" were aids of Nemesis - their task
was to drive criminals insane. The trio include Erinys
for vengeance, Dike for justice and Poena (penalty) for
sorrow. Athene became known as Pallas Athene to perpetuate
her guilt of having occidentally killed Pallas.

Play> Perhaps the mission of missionnaries saying mass
is to dismiss the guilt of uncivilized masses.

MENTOR Symbol of loyal guardian teacher - in memory of the
son of Hercules who was the guardian teacher of

MIND What controls passions and provides for cognition.
MENTAL Alcmaeon of Crotonia had sensational common sense
when he defined mind as the "seat of sensations".
          More recently a maxim states

these are the trappings of the mind".
          I prefer Aristotle and Cicero

ALETHEA in Greek represents (more or less) "Truth".
{without A LETHEA we may be left with the
           LETHal alternative of LIES}
In Rome the Greek ALETHEA became VERITAS.
"IN VINO VERITAS" was too racy for Harvard so it
survives in their logo in an amputated state. The
ancients did not speak of "Truth" in the sense
conveyed by our electronic MONETized preachers and
politicians (but they may be blameless since they
may have been charmed by the Roman Goddess MONETA
disguised as "Global Economy" promoting MONETAry
views of societal values). In any event, "Truth" in
ancient times stood for "disCOVERy" which may explain
why scientific "truth" can evolve with new
"disCOVERies". Only the Almighty can expose the "whole
truth" - mortals have a rather limited vision - except,
of course, for those who claim that God supplies them
with special revelations used at times to energize
revolts, revolutions or revolting prosecutions. There
is more if consideration is given to extra connections in

I found most sources lacking detail and perhaps
credibility. Therefore what is given here and
as "Word of the Day" represent personal views.

To my surprise, the Ukrainian words
LADA and LAD provide a good glimpse
LADA represents Spring or emerging life
LAD represents harmony and order.

Many LEADING LEADERS LEAD with a LEAD hand and
for a time can make people OBLIVIOUS to the fact
of unresolved conflicts which become LATENT but
in the long run are LETHAL.

Ideas found in Mythology can be weaved to link

DK asked about the roots of MISSION

W. W. Posted today are extracts from Pandora's Word Box
       MASS MISS MISSAL MISSILE MISSION

I presume that MISSing MASS may cause the disMISSal of a
comMISSion or the comMISSar of the MASSes -- on a more
serious note, Roman Emperors threw gifts or MISSILIA to
the MASSES - such gifts were signs of "MISSUS" a Latin
term for "FOR GIVEN" and "MISSIO" for "sent away" - in
Spanish MISA is MASS where Spaniards seek forgiveness.

Deserving attention are modern Jesuits missionaries ...

M.R. proposed that

              BIOLOGY

"means two ... two elements to make life ...
the first life ... a combination of two or
more elements ...".
D.A. asked about the implications in

              STERILE

W. W. Both words elucidate elegant ideas,
akin to those advanced by M.R.
However both word-ideas are linked to a
third word-idea included in my comment

              EROS

Today I post as "Word of the Day" BIOLOGY and
next time I will post EROTIC EROS and STERILE
In any event, explore BIOLOGY now and until
the next posting the comment given below may
bridge the gap.

The idea of "pairing" is at core of the end of

              CHAOS

after all, BIOLOGY has to do with MORPHOGENESIS
or MORPHOLOGY or the process of "ordering chaos".
(Poetically, Morpheus helps couples to "slip-sleep"
together perhaps to promote in prospective maternal
matters most often transacted on a mattress as one
way to procreate or create a fetus from chaotic
matter, a messy task glamorized by Eros and
ingrained by his girlfriend Psyche into our instincts
- links maternal-matter-mother-mattress were given in
past postings - (see page "Other Word-Ideas")

              EROS

In its early mythic character, Eros "polarized" inert
matter into opposites to induce "pairing" or order
between opposites. The first divine pair became
              GAIA

or earth who paired with

              URANUS

or the heavens. Later we find EROS entangled with
EROTIC and in company of

              VENERABLE VOLUBLE VENUS

who according to some experts was

              STERILE

an linked to the idea found in the Latin word

              STIRPES

which stands for "stem or root" and now in Spanish
ESTIRPE denotes "pride in a family tree or
pedigree" - but there may be some poetic justice
here because barns-bastards or non-paternity render
pride in spermatic lines vacuous - in other words
pride in root my be sterile.
There is more ... in Sanskrit STARY stands for sterile
and in Ukrainian STARYJ denotes old. So, the circle
tightens around pride in ancient ancestry is sterile.

One more twist may be worth a word or two. Note
that human BIOLOGY includes the property of compulsive
VENEREAL activities generating a "human population
explosion" which has claimed inordinate "living space"
without paying much attention to the

            EXTIRPATION

of countless species from existence.
The array given above could now include ideas relating to
extirpate - sterile - pride - ancestry

Reminder: find "Biology" as "Word of the Day", later to be
found in the page "Other word-ideas"; there you will
also find comments regarding

           ZEUS ZOON ZOO ZOIC ZODIAC

  Greek Hugies = living well
Hygeia Godess of Health or Hygiene

M.T. asked how ideas in ABDOMEN and WIND intersect.

W. W. The circuitry of connecting these ideas is
complex but fascinating. In fact, the adVENT
and conDUCT can be VENTilated and deDUCTted. This was
the case with a DICTator named Mussolini, otherwise
known as "DUCe". He was DUCtile and abDUCted the hopes
of Italians but as the war VENTilated new facts,
Italians deDUCTed that the adVENT and adVENTures of the
"DUCe" reflected a DOMineering personality endowed with
an ample abDOMinal bag of winds.

W. W. Cyparissus was the son of Telephus and asked
to become a Cypress tree ... (for more consult

The cypress tree is one of the symbols of Hades, note that
tradition calls for these trees to be planted in cemeteries.
The cypress is also the symbol of Juventas or Youth and of
Hebe or Ganymeda or Dia (she was replaced by Ganymedes as the
cup bearer for Zeus - she is often represented standing next

Ms. F.S. inquires about the origin and meaning of FATHOM

W.W. If I FATHOM this question, the word-idea
relates to the old Germanic word "FAETHM"
used the denote the span between between stretched arms -
those old Teutons must have been big - FATHOM now
stands for a distance of 6 feet and is used as a barbarian
measure of depth - Dr. W. Funk relates that sailors used
the distance between their outstretched arms to measure the
length of a lead line used to reach the bottom of the sea -
now we use this idea poetically to denote "to get to the
bottom" or "explore in depth" an issue or mystery.
Note: more remotely some experts link FAETH with the

T.K. seeks the etymology of ARAB
W.W. The word implies "DESERT DWELLER" and in this sense it
does not apply to Palestinians. Since Roman times
"an Arab" conveys the idea of outcast boys often surviving
as street vendors or rascals ...
In art, Arabesque implies an emphasis on decorative patterns ...
Arabic and Hebrew are the two main Semitic or Semito-Hamitic
languages ...

D.I. is curious about "RACISM"
W.W. The ideas conveyed by RACE RACIALISM RACISM are
complex and convoluted. The word itself is new and
in some tongues it does not exist. Fundamentally, the
idea is "THAT WHICH SETS APART" ...
in Spanish note TRAZA or trace and RAZA or race akin to
                TRAIT
Latin TRAHERE = to draw along
   Spanish TRAJIN = task
TRAJE brought and suit or vestment
   Latin TRACTUS trait
So, as you see, TRAIL TRAILER etc are related to
TRACE and RACE ... Space does not permit extending much
into RACISM, but RACE RACISM NATIVE NATION and NATIONALISM
correlate.

X.X. asked if "Good God" are they related?
W.W. Indeed! In my view, those who say NO
      should prove it!

There are many nuances and overlaps in the ideas
found in GOOD and GOD, words of Teutonic origin
and therefore having to do with GOThs. But ... similar
overlaps exist in other tongues.

Interestingly, in Slavic tongues Teutons are called
"dumb" but the Teutons considered them self to be rather
"special" and recent history speaks to this ...

The GOThs were not the only people that considered them self
to be GOD chosen, others do so to this day. If this relates

Anyway, note
Ukrainian zHODa implies GOOD, accord, fitting ...
akin to GOD fact pointed out by authorities

J. M. asked regarding the roots of birth and birth defects

W. W. the idea "birth" is among the most complex constellations
of "key ideas" and it is found broadly represented in
many facets of classic mythology, history, medicine, genetics,
teratology, eugenics, ethics ... in short, a child has the
human right to be born free from preventable birth defects ...
so what are we to do with mothers who choose to be an unsafe

The March of Dimes popularized birth defects in

W.W. Good question, perhaps because poets craft beauty ...
but ... A.K. is right ... good poets are remembered
more so that other artists ... perhaps because me can
grasp the "media" of words better that other artistic
abstractions like music, painting, etc.

The word itself connects poetry with esteem.
"Verses" to become poetic, must be valued as beauty,
being "ordinary" is NEMESIS to poetry.
Poetic "VERSes must reVERBerate" with ideals,

GKS wrote ... what about the origin of "insomnia"?

W.W. Great question! Perhaps it relates to a
fear of night, nightmares, darkness, death,
oblivion ... (I presume you know Spanish, if so,
explore DEMORA MORA MORAL)

I do not know where to begin. Lets say, once upon
the time, long long time ago, men got the idea
that NIX or NIGHT delivered twin brothers called
HYPNUS and THANATOS. These twins lived at the
entrance of TARTAROS and had the job to ease the
passage of mortals into OBLIVION. HYPNUS known
in Rome as SOMNUS, induced reversible SOMNOLENCE or
SLEEP while THANATOS induced permanent or LETHAL
LETHARGY. The son of HYPNOTIC HYPNUS was MORPHEUS
who decorated dreams using his gift of MORPHOGENESIS
to shape dreams that later fascinated Dr. S. Freud.
MORPHEUS was also known as ONEIROS, perhaps because
he could craft ONEROUS dreams or nightMARES
reminiscent of MARA the Goddess of darkness and
evil. So! MORPHEUS and MARA could MAR the best of
dreams, even conjure images of chiMERA or chiMARA
tricks. In any event, much later, physicians
discovered MORPHINE in Papaver SOMNIFERUM, an agent
that can MAR life by its promise of THANATOPHORIC
SOMBER SOMNOLENCE.

P.S. I almost forgot ... since time immemorial,
MORPHEUS fell in the habit of following
EROS ... modern folks, ignorant of mythology,
call this phenomenon, "love sleep" and physicians
refer to it as "post coital somnolence or lethargy".

It would be nice if we could show more of the ideas
pegged to the gallery of Gods NIX, THANATOS, LETHOS,
HYPNUS, MORPHEUS, HYPNOS, MARA, and their relatives
MORAL, GRAVE, FINIS etc. ... you should explore

W.W.: Thank you!!! (it is not an easy one.
TITANS and GIANTS stand for raw elementary
powers. Your hypoTHESis proposing a link between
THETtan Giants and Satan led me to the river STYX
where the Titaness or Gigantic Tethys or THETis
immersed her son Achilles because her THEsis was
that it would anesTHETize him to harm that
otherwise could send him to HADES.

I ask you to be sympaTHETic regarding the
aesTHETic value of these words. I do not know if
THETIS was COLOSSAL nor if she GIGGLED a lot when
dancing, liked to dine on GIGUE or if she
frequented the COLLOSEUM but I doubt she had a
GIGOLO. In any event, she did hold her son by
the TENDON now called Achilles.
(I do not know if connecting THETAN with THETIS
holds water but ... in Greek thes, thisenai,
tithenai, thesmo, thespis denote hold, place, act,
law; and fishing further in Spanish note tendencia,
tendon, tener, tango, tangente = denote to tend,
tendon, touch ... I let you pursue this line of
thoughts on your own.

Regarding HELL, the Christian version of HADES
(ukr had = evil) includes SATAN which is blamed
for many things, including science and scientists.
In fact, Drs. Faust in fiction and Galileo and
Darwin in fact, were until recent times, symbols
of anathema to at least one diplomatic theologic
delegation to the U.N. The old story is that
GIANTS were tucked away by Zeus to the underground,
which placed them near the domain of SATan who may
be a cousin of SATurn, at least on the basis that
both use time as the law by which all perishables,
including the living, eventually "go to hell".

Incidentally, most meteors and SATellites have been
named after mythologic GIANTS.

The subject you raised opens a whole sphere of
ideas contained in classic mythology and lends

Ms. L.S. was interested in the origin of
    the word "taxing"...

W.W. Well !!!, this is a long story ...
Once upon the time, to put order
and pay for it, somebody invented
SYNTAX TAXONOMY and TAXES. People being
what they are, would only comply if the
"clap of a whip" was used to TAG and TAX.
Real Kings developed ROYALTY CUSTOMS while
some commoners (gentiles) took up TAXIDERMY,
scientists invented TAXONOMY and
bureaucrats became fond of TAXICABS.
As people became TAXED BADGERED and AGGRAVATED,
they moved to the BADGER state and raised
BADGER DOGS or DACHSHUNDS which the scientists
called for good reason TAXA. As the TAXING and
GRAVE situation diminished the number of
GRAVIDITIES, many migrated to TEXAS in search
of a new social CONTEXT ...
the tail may not be true but its moral is ...

the rather profuse overlapping roots are

Joelene wrote: What do the names Savita and Rupa mean?

W.W: These are names of Indian deities and the answer
depends on how much you wish to probe religion
and mythology. I presume you do.

RUPA links with our ideas of
           SUBSTANTIATION
                SEER
               BEAUTY
                EROS
               DESIRE

RUPA is any outward shape or image of Buddha or
any other God. Therefore Rupa is any
spiritual "Substance" or "substantiation". In
this regard, religious artists and seers have
claimed special powers to perceive "Rupa".
RUPASTRA is an epithet for KAMA or "weapon of beauty".
KAMA is the god of love or "desire".
Perhaps, western modern art, often dissociated from
beauty, has lost its "rupa", "rupastra" and therefore
many of us find modern art lacking in KAMA.
Incidentally, sp CAMA denotes a resting site or bed
and is an idea-word of obscure origin but certainly
older that Latin.

SAVITA SAVITR SAVITRI links with western ideas of
                SUN
               LIGHT
             ENLIGHTEN
               WISDOM
               WORLD

SAVITR VIVASVAT etc. is "the one who brings forth",
the Sun-god. SAVITRI is the daughter of Sun and wife
of Brahma. Alternatively, a deity who fell in love
with a mortal man whose soul death took to the Land
of the Dead. Her loyalty to her husband is symbolized
by her being the sun and her husband the "dying sun".
The word connections given next are provocative but
NOT, to my knowledge, established. I prefer to look at
these connections in a poetic fashion:
fr SAVANT = wise knowledgeable
sp SABIO sage
skt SAVITA Sun god
ukr OSVITA education enlightened
     SVITLO light
     SVIT world

Hope this is a good start for you.

DZ asks if "MERCANTILISM" is "based on French" and
   has a connection with "MARKET"

WW There was life before France. Let me know what
the "she" Ph.D. instructor has to say.

A computer "cruising" across the Pandora's Word Box
contents exposes ideas of
volatile, quick, fickle like Mercury or quicksilver and
merciless, mercurial mercenaries, mercantilism and
(further away)
Hermes, hermaphrodite, purchase, trade, whore and
(far end)
pompous cleptomania

Note that in Classic Mythology, Hermes or Mercury stood
as champion of merchants, was a thief and "haste maker"
(note that haste is a mercantile tactic). Two of his
sons are of interest: Hermaphrodite and Antolycus,
the first represents a most fundamental ambiguity and the
other represents a champion thief.

At an early point, Hermes hid in the shape of an Ibis, the
Egyptian symbol of wisdom and judgment of the dead. Later,
Zeus commissioned Mercury to be pompous and play the role of
Psychopompos as the leader of the souls of the dead ...
or perhaps "dead mercenary souls". In any event, Hermes
sealed the fate of people, hermetically, hermits
included.

More recently, we named "quicksilver" Mercury since it is
slippery, it evaporates and is quite valuable.

sp mercado = market
lat mercatus commerce
    mercari to purchase

JR ... can anyone verify that writer
        Aldous Huxley coined the term
        Ecology ...

WW No!, I could not, but ...
I understand that the term was coined by
Ernst H. Haeckel (1839-1910). Take it from there
and if you confirm it, let me know !!!

The word-idea ECOLOGY is gaining impact and scope.
Science and biology increasingly point out how
human "growth" relies on irreversible "consumption".
"Extinction" of natural resources implies the
impoverishment of future generations, perhaps one
reason why "eco"logy provides a contrast to "eco"nomy
and has acquired "ecu"menical, ethical and
political overtones. Theocentric (homocentric)
biblical and other "non-primitive" religions rarely
focus on "ecology" but even this aloofness may be
ending.

Jose Ortega y Gasset in "Meditations on Quixote" noted
"I am I plus my surroundings
and if I do not preserve the latter
 I do not preserve myself".

Pope Joannes Paulus II in 1968 noted
" ... the world peace is threatened
by a lack of respect for nature
by the plundering of natural resources
... the most profound and serious indication
... of the lack of respect for life"

Relating the roots of Ecology to other
kin word-ideas adds depth to its scope.

Greek OIKOS = main room or house

       ECOLATE HABITATION
                 (further ideas)
                 sp MORADA = habitat

                      MORTAL "late"
                      MORAL stop and think

     Also see "mother" and consider
Gaea (Demeter or Ceres) a deity akin to
     the idea of "mother earth".

CG is interested in the origins of Bill, Honkey and Yankee.
WW I am not an expert in "hypocoristic" and slang terms,
my interest is in "ideas in words", particularly if
the ideas bridge different cultures to complement purely
"linguistic" markers. With this warning I can share the
sketchy ideas given below.

BILL: Perhaps there is no simple or satisfactory
answer regarding the origins of "Bill" but
it can be grouped with BULLA BILLET etc.
              to uncerscore the idea of
PROMINENT PUFFED ERECT STIFF as in BOIL BULLY
BUTTON BALL BOLL BUBO BULK BLISTER BLOT
BILLY once stood for brother and its feminine was TITTIE
BILLYCOCK was a bulky hat worn during the 1770's
by boisterous Oxford young people known as
BULLIES which may explain the connection of
WILLIAM to BILL or BILLY if it is true that in 1720
BILLY COKE of Leicester popularized the BILLY COCK hat.

HONKEY or
HONKY vituperation of recent vintage and of uncertain origin
used by "black" militants to deprecate
        "white" "liberals"
"... "whites honk their horn " (hypocrites)

DA wrote: ... misanthropy is the hatred of mankind
... misogeny is the hatred of women ...
what is the word that defines the hatred of men?

WW: gr missein = to hate
Andrology and gynecology are with us but
perhaps the strong feminine desire for motherhood may be
one reason for the agenesis of a term like "misandrogy".
Even the amazing amazons "consorted" with men to
perpetuate their "misandrogy". Love and lust are not
voluntary and can conveniently be "blamed" on "temptation"
including feminine beauty or "sex" appeal.
(Eve, Pandora, Venereal Venus).

A negative emphasis on "women" is also notable in
terms for step-parents as in step-mother and
          parents-in-law as in mother-in-law
which may be used to convey ideas of evil ...

" ... I am glad you have fallen into my hands ...
  (said Venus to Psyche)
  because you are safe here
safe in the jaws of hell ...
  but make yourself at home
I promise you the sort of welcome
  that a good mother-in-law
is bound to give her sons's wife"
  (from "Cupid and Psyche")

JP: "SAGIUS" ... is there such a word ?
WW: Perhaps, if it is, as I suspect, from Latin and
    it denotes sagacious ...

Note: saga, sage and the Latin terms
      SAGIUS, sagax, sagacior, sagire.
These words convey "acute sentio" as in
"quick in any sense", shrewd, intuitive.

Note: Sagitta or arrow re sharp or acute tip.
      Consider "cute", and accuse.

PB writes: "... would you be interested in helping me ...
                 etymology of the word "landscape"

WW: At first glance "land" and "scape" stand out.
Landscape currently is often used as
"panorama" to convey ideas linked with scenery as in
"economic landscape". Inherently such ideas are limited
to a scope of view. In this regard "land" is inherently
a "region" as in old Celtic LAN = valley or enclosed land
or in old Frisian LOND = region. Lond points toward LAWN.

The "scape" component is from SKIP or SHIP. Landscape was
formerly given as landskip or landship. Ship, as a suffix,
can be used to imply quality of status, as in friendship.

In the near future, I will post LANDSCAPE in the "Word of
the Day" page under Pandora's Word Box where more extensive
links will be given under LAND LANDSCAPE and SHIP.

The above lends itself to other ideas. Your comments are welcome.

H R writes "I wanted to name (a recently acquired puppy) BOPIC ...
it's eyes look too big for it's head ...
my husband is furious ... he thinks BOPIC is
a medical term for having eyes like a
Mongoloid child ... Will you please settle this ..."

WW: I am more prone to prove to be unsettling.

First, let me express my sympathy toward BOPIC, he is a
beautiful creature. Even frogs with BOPIC eyes are
interesting. But it may interest you that those who take
time and are sensitive may agree with the Olympian Gods that
BOPIC eyes represent a nice attribute. Such complements
were reserved for Venus and Hera. As far "mongoloid" goes,
I will inform the Republic of Mongolia to have their people
checked for hyperthyroidism just in case their people indeed
have BOPIC eyes. But frankly, I am skeptical, because neither
"Mongoloid" patients nor Mongoloid people have particularly
prominent eyes. However if you truly think that BOPIC has
Down syndrome (a kinder term for "mongolism") please call
the media and the March of Dimes. You will contribute to
the US Genome Project, become famous, and BOPIC may get
a federal grant.

Next, let me suggest that you watch carefully BOPIC and
prevent in him a tendency toward BULIMIA particularly if
you note an early addiction for BUTTER because this will
BUTCHER his health. Furthermore, I think BOPIC may
become irritating or even an OXYMORON. My not so
scientific reasons are given below. Should I invest
3 days to investigate this subject further, I may
post more details under a future "play on words".

Now, to some facts in brief: BOS BOVIS BOUS relate to BEEF
BUCOLIC BUFF BUFFALO BUTTER BULEMIA BUTCHER. Even in
Ukrainian BYK means OX. Of course, some readers may prefer
to think of the connections emanating from OX as BULL.
I can not resist to tell you that OXYS OXUS relates to
irritating or prickly. In this regard OXYGEN is that.
I am ignorant if an OX OXYS - BOS BOUS connection is
real but it is self evident that OX have horns and that
horny OXYMORONS are irritating.

Finally, where did your husband get his ideas from
regarding BOPIC ??? ask him to educate me.

Best regards, love to BOPIC. (WW)

Regarding Barb Barbarian

Mr. GJ wrote "the etymology of BARBARIAN BARB offered is
  surely specious" ... perhaps ... ... but ...
even traditional sources are vague about the implications in
barbarian or barb and have a tendency to give credit to that
which they know most, that is, "classic" cultures. There is no
convincing basis to associate barbarians with blabbering idiots, as
several traditional sources suggest. It seems that when in doubt,
traditional sources emphasize Greek, Sanskrit etc. (when in
fact, modern evidence points out that Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, etc.
probably evolved from peoples that migrated from the regions
adjacent to the Euxine and Caspian areas, and therefore
represent derivatives and not primary linguistic sources).
In any event, under "BARB", the Etymological Dictionary of modern
English by E. Partridge points out the elements of:
  "barb ... horse (hair) ... barbarian ... barbarous ... Berber "

It may be of interest to point out that the "hairy" horses were
domesticated by the same "hairy" people mentioned above. It is
also evident that Greek-Latin cultures and Roman armies relied
less on horse than the "barbarians" did.

In a lighter tone, it is obvious that "clean" shaven Romans had
rather "hairy" experiences when fighting "dirty" bearded barbarians.
Much later, Saxons disliked the mustache or "bigote" of the Normans
and such "bigotry" against "bigotudos" persists in many navies.
It is obvious that hair styles are a mark of social status ...
that aliens are often considered alienating and that
a "barbarian" is a designation implying at least two points:
"noticeable" and failure to evoke gladness, as in
"crass, crude, flagrant, glaring, rough, stoking, uncultured"
(the link of barbarian to "horses ass" is spurious, but the
links - Bigote Mustache and Bigotry are sustainable.

To conclude: perhaps some cardinal ideas in words persist
beyond the frames imposed by conventional
               linguistic analysis.
Thanks to GJ for the comment, more points are welcomed.
  W.W.
